Times They Are A Changing

by Dave
(Shaw)

Made a bookshelf at school
With old woodworking tools
Dovetail joints, mortices and tenons
In Sapele mahogany
Expensive wood for my lessons

Today you'd be lucky
To have melamime supplied
Much poorer quality
Than the mahogany I plied

How times have changed for the worse

Bookshelves were made
In metalwork class too
Much smaller though
More difficult to do

It's metal and woodwork no more
Now it's arts and crafts
No trade specific
But a good broad mixture...perhaps

How times have changed for the worse

Graham, my art school teacher
Kindly threw me some pots
To place on my new bookcase
I'd like to thank him lots

How times have changed for the worse.

Times I agree have changed
by: Anonymous

Whether times have changed for the worse, only perhaps industry could say. Certainly the classes we used to have were specific, ie trades in metalwork and carpentry.
There were others though like cookery and needlework classes which were female only until just befor I left school in the 60's.
I suppose a broader range of crafts has the possibility of everyone finding a subject or craft they enjoy and is probably best for todays world.
So this rating for the page is I think debatable therefore 3 stars for the poem less 1 star for the controversy.
